In a 2 tier bento box, does the rice go on the top or the bottom?

The tiers are the same size, if that affects anything. In a 2 tier bento box, does the rice go on the top or the bottom?
On the bottom. There might be a more traditional answer as to why, but I've always assumed that it was because the top tier created a visual feast when first opened. Plus, the rice (though important) is looked at as more of a base while the side dishes are the true variety in both looks and taste. I've seen people use furikaki and umeboshi to jazz up the rice, but even then it's always been on the bottom tier.In a 2 tier bento box, does the rice go on the top or the bottom?
i pack a bento most of the time to take to work, i don't think that it matters whether the rice goes on top or bottom, personally. it depends on the presentation. like, if the rice were in cute shapes and colors, i'd put it on top, but if it was just plain, i'd put it on bottom. either way, have fun with your bento! :D

Lunches to put in a bento box?

I have always admired how much more beautiful a traditional style bento box from japan looks than a lunchbox. The only problem for me is that I'm not expert on making the food that goes in it, such as the rice-balls and other cute things they do. Most of the food I wouldn't even know where to purchase. What are some more average but still healthy items that I can put in the boxes? I've already thought of just sliced fruit and certain vegetables, but can anyone give me some ideas on items that I can get almost anywhere?Lunches to put in a bento box?

  • How to make a bento box quilt?

I want to make my first quilt and I like the bento box pattern. I was wondering how to cut the pattern and what size the pieces should be. I think I want the quilt to measure out to about 75"x100". Any help would be really appreciated. Also how many yards of fabric should I buy if I want 6 different fabrics? How to make a bento box quilt?
The Bento Box Quilt is basically a half log cabin.

http://www.crazycreekquilts.com/bento-bo鈥?/a>How to make a bento box quilt?
First, IMO that size is,,, ambitious for a first quilt. That said, 7500 sq. in. divided by 1296 sq in/sq yd = ~6 yds. Divide that by 6 colors, and you're looking at a sq yard of each. Fabric is usually 44-45 in wide, which comes out to ~1.25 sq yds/running yd. Taking into account variables like waste, mistakes, selvedge, etc., I like to add 25%, so I would estimate 1.25 sq yds, or 1 running yard of each fabric.

Don't forget the backing. Backing fabric comes very wide, so 100+8 (4 inches extra on al sides is recommended) /36 = 3 running yds of backing.

As for patterns, you don't provide enough information, so try these and pick one you like (and can follow) ;-)How to make a bento box quilt?
i dont have a pattern but basicly you can make a square, lets say 4x4inch.

Then you would make a 4inch long by 4inch for 'top' of the square. then make a 6inch by 4inch strip, sew that onto the side, and so on.

Depends on the size of square you start with, is how much fabric you'll need

As the first answer says... Mitsuwa on Paularino. The Parking lot is a horrendous nightmare at the weekend. Saturday being the worst day. Go during the week if you can. There is valet parking too.

Also, some of The Best sushi in Southern Calif. can be had, in of all places... A supermarket!. We are lucky enough to have branches of Japan's Daikichi Sushi supply the sushi, sold in Mitsuwa Marketplace. I'm of Japanese heritage. Mitsuwa is frequent trek for me. But I favour the one in Torrance which is not only closer to me, but bigger as well.

You don't say which part of the OC you're in. Just in case you're in Southern Orange County, I've included the info for the San Diego Mitsuwa as well. It may well be closer to you, if you're in the Southern end of the OC.

Before you pick up your Bento Box... Be sure to head into the chilled drinks section of the store and pick up a couple of bottles of Fauchon tea to have with your bento. The peach flavour and also the apple flavour, are highly refreshing and addictive! Also, don't leave without picking up a bag of BonChi Rice Snack in "Japanses Soy Sauce Flavour". These super crunchy rice crackers are baked, and everyone's favourite.Does anyone know where I can get Bento in Orange County, CA?

If you're in Japan, you can find them just about everywhere, from discount stores to high end retailers.

Daiso, a popular chain of "dollar" stores in Japan, has an online shop for people in the US. They have a section dedicated to obento.Where is a great place to look for Japanese items like chopsticks or bento boxes?
If you're going to Japan, you can check for what are called 100 yen stores, which are like discount stores. They have literally everything under the sun made in Japan in them, and you'll probably go broke or crazy or both shopping in them.

I don't live in Japan, but I live on a US island about 3 hours flying time south of Japan. We have a rather large Japanese community here, which is growing by leaps and bounds. We have at least three 100 yen stores here, and I shop at all three now and then. Here we call them $1.50 stores because almost everything is priced at $1.50.

I've been to Japan many many times, and feel the same as you do about the culture, food, etc. If you'd like a little more info please feel free to contact me here, and I'll get the names of some good stores from some friends for you.

'Obento' is basically rice and 'okazu', anything that goes with rice (meat, fish, egg, etc.). Bento usually includes some type of pickled or salted vegetable to accompany the food and cleanse the palate. In Japan, food is supposed to stimulate all the senses, including the eyes. See the attached link to see the creativity of the Japanese.

i wold suggest ur bento include onigiri(rice balls), ebi fry(fried prawns), as ur main dish. japs also like to include sausages in their bento where they cut the sausage into 2 or 3 smaller parts and then snip the end of a piece of the smaller sausage so that the end kind of split opens to look something like a squid.(i've included a link on how to make this pattern on a sausage) it would be great if u could include fresh fruits in ur bento, like watermelons.

meanwhile i invite u to click on the links for the recipes(1st link on onigiri, 2nd link on ebi fry, 3rd link on various other japanese food recipes u can include in ur bento, 4th link sausages patterns), while my hands take a break.. hope my compuer doesn't go through another dc..

    Bento Chicken Teriyaki Recipe

This recipe is adapted from one in Bento Boxes by Naomi Kijima. It is scaled for a single lunchbox (bento box) sized serving. Add this to a big bowl of rice and veggies, maybe with some Japanese type pickles, and you have a great lunch! This recipe is not a quick recipe, though; cooking time includes marinating time. I would suggest starting the chicken in the marinade, then starting your rice, then fixing everything else while you wait for these two to finish.

    1 tablespoon soy sauce

    1 tablespoon mirin

    1 teaspoon sugar

4 ounces boneless chicken (breast, tenders, thighs, whatever you have)

    1/2 tablespoon cooking oil

    3 tablespoons water

Mix first 3 ingredients together in bowl big enough to hold the chicken. Add the chicken. Let this marinate for 30 minutes, turning over halfway through.

Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.

Take the chicken out and pat dry. Reserve marinade. Put chicken skin side down (if you aren't using skinless) in pan and cook until browned on that side (just a minute or two) and then flip and brown the other side.

Pour reserved marinade over chicken and cover tightly. Lower heat and simmer until chicken is done, about 5 minutes.

Remove cover and raise heat back to medium high. Reduce marinade until it is more of a glaze. Toss chicken in glaze to cover.

NOTE: You could certainly substitute beef or tofu for the chicken in this recipe. Just adjust the cooking accordingly.

    Bento Balls (Aka French Hamburgers)

My kids and I spend Wednesdays out in the woods either hiking, biking, or letterboxing. We have to take a huge lunch with us and usually it's a Japanese-style bento with onigiri, some protein item, and lots of vegies and pickles. More often than not, my kids will pick this for the protein...it's basically a french hamburger recipe that has been adapted for our bento lunches. Cooking time will vary with how large your patties are. The sauce is a true basting sauce and these will not be in a soupy sort of base. The point of bentos is to make the food as fuss-free to eat as possible. The meat mixture is soft and a bit tricky to work with, but the result is a moist patty that doesn't need condiments and isn't a rubbery hard superball.

    MEAT PATTIES

    1 cup fine dry breadcrumbs

1 cup havarti with dill (grated)

    3 tablespoons prepared horseradish

    3 tablespoons dried onions

1 teaspoon salt (or salt-spice mix of your choice, we prefer a Creole seasoning)

1/2 cup cottage cheese (or 1/4 cup dairy of some sort)

    1 large egg

    1 1/2 lbs ground turkey

    BASTING SAUCE

    1/2 cup butter (melted)

    1/2 cup ketchup

    1-2 tablespoon soy sauce

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prepare a baking sheet by lining with parchment or foil.

Lightly coat the parchment or foil with cooking spray.

Mix the bread crumbs, havarti, horseradish, dried onion, salt (or spice-salt mix), cottage cheese, and egg together in a large bowl. (Please note that the horseradish should be prepared, i.e., the creamy kind that is mixed with mayonnaise. We use the Beaver brand.).

Allow to stand for 5 minutes to soften the bread crumbs.

    Mix in the ground turkey.

The meat mixture will be very soft.

Form the meat into balls that will fit into your bento box(or on your plate).

Flatten slightly so that the meat is formed into shapes resembling patties.

Place in the oven to bake for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the basting sauce by combining the melted butter, ketchup, and soy sauce.

Carefully turn the patties over and put them back in the oven until 20 minutes before the meat is cooked through.

    **********.

The time to finish cooking will depend on how large you made your patties.

I use a meat thermometer to check for doneness.

    **********.

Approximately 20 minutes before the meat cooks through, baste one side of the meat with the sauce, returning to the oven for 10 minutes.

Turn and baste the other side and return to the oven for the remaining 10 minutes.

Let cool, add to your bento box, and have a great day hiking.

Soy Sauce Eggs -- Bento Eggs Recipe

These eggs are really different from your standard hard boiled eggs and my kids love to have the in their bentos. The trick is to only medium boil the eggs initially and then crack or peel them and finish them off in the soy sauce broth. I use the smallest eggs I can find to do these, so that my kids can have two eggs and I don't have to feel guilty. The eggs aren't supposed to be overwhelmingly seasoned, but if that's what you're looking for, leave them in the broth for a longer period after boiling. I routinely double the recipe by increasing the number of eggs, but leave the amount of the broth ingredients the same.

6 small eggs (smallest ones you can find)

3/4 cup reduced sodium soy sauce

    1 cup water

    1 slice gingerroot

    1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder

Boil the eggs until they are just coagulated, and place them immediately in cold water. You will need to PEEL the eggs or crack them well, so the egg whites need to be firm enough to withstand this.

Tap eggs gently all over to cover with cracks or peel them entirely. Cracking the eggs will give them a mottled look that is really beautiful, but peeling them will give them a consistent coating.

Add the eggs to a pot that is small enough that when filled with 1 cup soy sauce, 1 cup water, 1 slice of ginger, and half teaspoon of five-spice powder, the liquid completely covers the eggs.

Simmer over low heat for 25 to 30 minutes, then let steep for another 1/2 hour. Cool.

If you have left the shells on, crack open the eggs and peel them.

Slice into wedges and serve.Does anyone have any good bento box recipes??

This is such a simple thing to do, and there鈥檚 no better time to do it than in the summer when so many fruits are in season. Cut up any soft ripe fruit, and put them into silicon cupcake liners or wrap in plastic film. Then stash each cup or bundle in a freezer safe plastic container. You can then take out a cup or two and tuck them into your bento box. They act as an edible cooler for your bento. The container here has a cut up nectarine (divided into two silicon liners) and 2 small bananas (divided into 4).

Bento is a complete meal usually consisting of rice, meat or fish, and side (vegetables). Sometimes with some fruits.

What are in traditional Japanese bento boxes?

And where can I find the boxes themselves as well as the food? What are in traditional Japanese bento boxes?
Bentō (弁当 or べんとう, Bentō?) is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables as a side dish. Containers range from disposable mass produced to hand crafted lacquerware. Although bento are easily available in many places throughout Japan, including convenience stores, bento shops (弁当屋, bentō-ya?), train stations, and department stores, it is still common for Japanese homemakers to spend considerable time and energy producing an appealing boxed lunch.

Bento can be very elaborately arranged. Contests are often held where homemakers can compete for the most aesthetically pleasing arrangements. The food is decorated to look like people, animals, or characters and items such as flowers and plants. This style of elaborate bento is called kyaraben.

you can get it at the Japanese shop or online. What are in traditional Japanese bento boxes?
The boxes you should be able to find at an Asian market. If you want very high quality lacquer boxes, you'll need to find a Japanese furnishings store, possibly online.

As for the usual contents, I think they vary by region and meal. But a dinner box will usually have sushi or sashimi, sumomono salad, a protein like chicken or beef perhaps prepared teriyaki style, and another vegetable or salad, perhaps gyoza. What are in traditional Japanese bento boxes?

I think most people in Japan love it.

It is so simple. put rice and add weaweed then pour soy souce.(not too much though) That is it. I love is so much.

Seaweed should tear randomly. Not too big.

I love with cooked mini winners and cooked sweet egg rolls. Egg rolls are not spring rolls though. Egg add suger and cook. It is a little sweet and most Americans do not like it. I make my friends try it and none of them like it.....

Also I cook fried boneless chickin. It is very good. It is called karaage. You need minched garlic and soy source and cooking sake. Mix together and add the chicken for a while. After that add flour and fry it. That is so tasty too.
meat or fish. rice. tempura or sashimi. soup. some sushi.

Should I store a bento box lunch (w/ rice in it) in the fridge or at room temp when at work?

If I make it in the morning and keep it at room temp until lunch time, is it safe? Or do I need to refrigerate? I'm concerned about the rice getting hard if I refrigerate.Should I store a bento box lunch (w/ rice in it) in the fridge or at room temp when at work?
Hello Meringue, In Japan we usually don't refrigerate our bento lunches as it causes the rice to go hard and its not as tasty. I do carry mine in a special bento lunch box case that comes with an ice pack. This acts as a kind of fridge, but not as cold and keeps the bento nice and fresh for lunch.Should I store a bento box lunch (w/ rice in it) in the fridge or at room temp when at work?
I'd refrig it and if you are worried about dry rice, just add water to the rice and heat up. Food goes bad within 30 minutes.Should I store a bento box lunch (w/ rice in it) in the fridge or at room temp when at work?
I suggest refrigerating it b/c of the rest of the food in the box, bacteria spreads easier when things are not refrigerated

Chirashi would be authentic.I just got a bento kit; what types of foods should I make with it?
Hello Ashley, The typical Japanese bento lunch box consist of a meat, rice and some vegetables and/or pickles. The meat can be a variety of fish such as salmon, or fried chicken, pork cutlets, sausage, hamburger. The rice can be plain or consist of a topping sprinkled on called “furikake”.

For an easy Japanese bento lunch box try some boiled white rice or onigiri (rice ball) with a rolled omlette and a few small main dishes like karaage (Japanese fried chicken), hamburger, tonkatsu (deep fried pork cutlet), gyoza (dumpling), spring rolls, mini sausages, potato or pasta salad.

Would it be odd for a transfer student to take a bento lunch to school?

I someone from America were to transfer to Japan, would it be odd for them to take a bento box to school?Would it be odd for a transfer student to take a bento lunch to school?
What level of school will you be entering?

In elementary and middle/junior high school, the vast majority of students AND teachers eat school lunch, which is the same for every school within a particular area (lunch is made in a central location and delivered to each school). While there are students and teachers who bring their own lunches for whatever reason, it's rare. Also, as a foreigner, eating school lunch like everyone else (or at least giving it a try) would score you huge brownie points with your classmates. At may school everyone made a big fuss over my first Japanese school lunch, and I'm one of the teachers, not a student.

According to my friend who works in a senior high school, students and teachers usually bring lunch from home because senior high schools aren't included in the school lunch system. Apparently this is because elementary and junior high school are mandatory while high school is optional. So in a high school, if you brought lunch from home, it would be quite normal.

In the end it's up to you to decide what to do.Would it be odd for a transfer student to take a bento lunch to school?
    It's not odd at all.

It's your lunch, do what you want with it.Would it be odd for a transfer student to take a bento lunch to school?
Nope. According to my daughter, most of her friends bring their own lunch. At least in her school, they don't even have a cafeteria that prepares food. You have the option of ordering a lunch if you don't bring your own.Would it be odd for a transfer student to take a bento lunch to school?
Not at all, if the school you go to doesn't serve lunch. But someone has to prepare the bento in the morning!

Would bento boxes be good for school?

I live in Scotland and have grew a fetish for bento boxes recently and i was wondering if it would be a good idea to take one to school as a lunch? The only real thing in concerned about is being judged by other people.....but oh well i may as well let them.Would bento boxes be good for school?
Go for it, and let me know how you get on, because I live in Scotland and we have an addiction for sushi lately, and while I would love to take it to work and my oldest would love to take it to school for her lunch, we kind of think people would look down their noses at us.Would bento boxes be good for school?
It depends on what you put into it. Remember, sushi, rice, fruits, etc.. can become bad or spoiled after several hours, especially in the heat. If you pack a Bento, find some recipes for non-perishing lunches. As for being "judged", don't worry. If you like it and enjoy it, do it! Bento Box is another word for Lunch Box. This set of susi, could be served with many different sushi. It depends on which restaurant you go to. If you have extensive knowledge about sushi you would understand that they packed their Bento BOx according to costs of production for producing Bonto Box.

Yes profitability is a main factor discussed here. The point is that many restaurants "Japanese" do produce their Bento Box differently. The other factor to consider is resources availability which the restaurant can produce this Bento Box.What typically goes into an asian bento?

What can I make for lunch that I put in this bento?

Doesn't need to be Japanese, it seemed like a good system to carry food. What can I make that is healthy and will still be good 3 1/2 hours after it is packed? What can I make for lunch that I put in this bento?
Pasta, not so good. Especially if there is vinegar or citrus or peppers, it just intensifies the flavors. I have done pasta and is doable but not my fav.

Grilled herb and parmesan chicken is good, can be cooked and chilled. With a wildrice salad with spinach, tomatoes, kalamatas. For health reason by food safe standards food can only be left out 4 hours before serious bacteria start to grow. If you do a pasta leave the dressing on the side and do something no perishable like a lemon oil, or herb oil. Use some fresh lettuce on the bottom and top with grilled veggies. Sushis go well with bentos with fried chicken. Hard lettuce like Romaine and Iceberg hold up well with some croutons. Grilled salmon on asian style noodles go well. Or what about a somen salad, tofu and tuna salad. There are a lot of options but make sure you think about how the outcome of the flavors will be in for hours. Bento means room temp. A lot of the foods we have in Hawaii withstand the temperatures. We do fried chicken, hot dogs, rice, pickled veggies, musubis and noodles because it does not have elements that spoil. Good luck with your venture. Also teriyaki beef or chicken, egg fuyong or egg omelette with veggies, katsu. What can I make for lunch that I put in this bento?

Questions on how to make a bento box and keep it fresh?

i have a bento box and it has nothing to seperate it inbetween.

I need ideas on what to put in it, how to cook it, but over all. How do i keep it all fresh during school til lunch?Questions on how to make a bento box and keep it fresh?
it should still be fresh until lunch.Thoroughly re-heat then cool any cooked food before packing

Using leftover and pre-cooked food reduces the time needed to assemble your bento in the morning. But the longer food has been lying around, even in the refrigerator, it gets less fresh and edible. Re-heating cooked food helps to kill off any micro-organisms that may have started to grow.

The best way to re-heat things in my opinion is in a pan, rather than the microwave, because the surface is where the microorganisms are likely to have formed, and the high heat of a pan will kill those off immediately. This is particularly important with meat.

In some cases it can be okay to pack food direct from the refrigerator, such as pre-made salads, instant pickles, and so on. Do use common sense though; packing leftovers from the night before is probably okay, but leftovers from 3 days ago gets iffy.

Keep cool foods separate from hot

Remember the McDLT? The gimmick with that burger was the two-part styrofoam container, with one side for the lettuce and tomato, and the other for the burger and bun. (Here鈥檚 an old commercial for the McDLT featuring Jason Alexander, who played George Costanza on Seinfeld.) There was logic behind this rather environmentally unfriendly packaging. Any foods that should be kept cool, such as raw fruits and vegetables, should be kept in a separate container from the cooked foods, even if the cooked foods have had a chance to cool down. This will keep veggies fresh and crisp.

Do you need an ice pack?

Unless an ice pack is specifically called for, all the complete bento lunch ideas as well as the individual component recipes are meant to be safe to eat without refrigeration, if the safety precautions on this page are followed.

In hot weather, it鈥檚 safer to pack an ice pack with the cool food. One trick is to freeze a juice carton or a small plastic bottle filled with the beverage of your choice, and to freeze it. Pack that with your lunch box, and it acts as an ice pack and will have defrosted enough to drink by lunch time.

If you鈥檙e carrying a bento meal that鈥檚 meant to be consumed more than a few hours later 鈥?e.g., a bento packed in the morning meant to be eaten in the evening for a night class 鈥?use an ice pack to be on the safe side, or use the foods that keep food fresher longer listed below. (An umeboshi onigiri (rice ball) will even keep for a couple of days.)

Certain foods that help keep things fresher

Traditionally, umeboshi (pickled plum) has been used in bentos and as onigiri filling. The traditional hinomaru bento, a bento box filled with white rice sporting one, lone umeboshi in the middle, is a very good keeper. (Incidentally, the logo for Just Bento is inspired by the hinomaru bento.) Umeboshi may have antimicrobial qualities, as do (supposedly) shiso leaves.

Fresh, nontoxic green leaves used as dividers and wrappers are also supposed to have antibacterial qualities. These are not edible. The most popular one is fresh bamboo leaves. (Dried bamboo leaves are also used as as wrappers, but don鈥檛 have the same antimicrobial qualties as fresh.) Banana leaves, used in South-East Asian cuisine, may have similar properties.

Wasabi and ginger may also help to keep things fresher. Try using wasabi to flavor vegetables (example: broccoli with wasabi sauce), or tucking some pickled ginger in the corner of your bento.

Salt is a time tested preserver, so the salt you put on the surface of onigiri is not just for flavor - it鈥檚 to keep the rice fresher longer.

Sugar can also act as a preservative (think of jams and preserves), though you need to use it in some quantity.

Vinegar is also a preserver. Salty or vinegary foods keep longer than foods with little seasoning. Sushi rice keeps better than plain rice because of the vinegar, salt and sugar.

here are some basic things in the bento-have fun

    http://justbento.com/

onigiri- rice wrapped in nori seaweed- you could make pretty designs on them.

    tamagoyaki- a rolled up egg

broccoli, carrots, snow peas, cut into pieces

    salmon

white riceQuestions on how to make a bento box and keep it fresh?
A good idea would be a sandwich sliced into smaller pieces so you can arrange it into the box, along with various fruits and veggies, possible placed into little paper cups (think the kind you use for muffins and such) if you can fit them in. A good place to look for inspiration is http://community.livejournal.com/bentolu鈥?/a>

Do you mean an actual lunch box? or do you mean just the box??

I think you can probably find both at a japanese store. I'm sure there are some stores that specifically sell to the japanese. Thus you can purchase things there.
    Make your it yourself

While the Japanese term "bento" roughly translates to "box lunch" in English, this is not your average packed lunch. The goal with bento is to assemble a meal that is just as appealing to the eyes as it is to the taste buds. It's not uncommon for Japanese mothers to prepare an elaborate, playfully and creatively decorated boxed lunch to entice their children to eat all of their food when they're at school. If you're sick of bringing a sloppy sandwich to work or you'd like your kids to look forward to opening their lunch box, there's a lot to be learned from the bento tradition.

Where can i buy a Bento Box?

I need one for my friends birthday present. I plan to give it to her around the 10th of December so I don't have time to order one online. Does anyone know from what stores I could buy a bento box?Where can i buy a Bento Box?
A bento box is basically the Japanese version of a lunch box. Most bentos are made by hand, so I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to make one yourself as long as you have access to an asian food market.

In case you can't find one pre-made. You need a black, preferably laquerware box if you're going old school. Make sure it's for food and it should be about 2 inches deep. If the box is not for food you can just Saran wrap the bottom. If you can't find a real box, try the bottom of a box of chocolate.

Then you need some Japanese rice. Cook it and shape it into cylinders the size and shape of a Twinkies roll. Sprinkle some sesame seeds on top of two and wrap the other two in nori (the seaweed stuff sushi rolls are wrapped in). Alternate them aesthetically, sesame, wrapped, sesame, wrapped.

Next, find some tempura-ed stuff like shrimp tempura and veggie tempura, put that in. Add a chunk of a baked fish, a meatball, some spaghetti (with sauce already mixed in) each in its own muffin wrapper. If you can find some seaweed in mirin or soy sauce than add that as a the vegetable. If not, add some shredded lettuce.

That's what is in the bento at my corner store in Japan so it may sound weird, but it's 100% authetic. I kid you not. However, a bento can have a whole bunch of different stuff in it just like your never sure what kind of food you will find in someone's lunch box. Just make sure there are about two bites worth of everything that is not rice and try to have everything in it's own little muffin wrapper or section.

For retail stores near you, see the Bento Store Locator (BSL) with Google Maps for international reader-generated store listings and feedback. Online sources include the online bento store list as well as the Lunch in a Box Amazon store. Purchases made through the Amazon store or affiliate links support Lunch in a Box with pennies on the dollar at no increased cost to the buyer. If you鈥檙e in the San Francisco Bay Area, have a look at the SF Bay Area shopping guide for bento gear, which has all of my local store reviews together in one place.

Pack it compactly with little gap fillers like cherry tomatoes or grapes to stabilize the lunch for transport. There鈥檚 nothing worse than packing a lunch that looks nice in the morning, only to open it and find that everything鈥檚 slid around and mixed up when you鈥檙e ready to eat.

Think about what foods will be touching, and which flavors won鈥檛 be appetizing if they mix. Use edible separators such as lettuce or cucumber slices, or reusable silicone baking cups or lidded condiment cups to keep everything at its best until lunchtime. Wash and reuse disposable condiment cups that you get with takeout 鈥?they last forever when hand washed.

What are the basics for a japanese bento box?

I already have sushi and sticky rice. What else? I'm not a vegetarian. What are the basics for a japanese bento box?
The typical Japanese bento lunch box consist of a meat, rice and some vegetables and/or pickles.

We were just there in June and my teens love to shop in the Japanese pavilion but I don't recall seeing any bento boxes (lunch box style is what I suppose you are asking about?) They did have the trays like you would get in a restaurant when you order a bento lunch. I seem to recall most were under $25.

Make sure your friend is not meaning the puzzle boxes? They have several with the very small starting at $45 and the larger, more moves and design going into several hundred.

    Good luck and have fun.

I'm not even sure, but I've been seeing alot of my friends mention them and my guess is it has to do with cooking somehow?

Is it like an Asian dish or something? What is a bento box and how does one make it?
Bento box is a Japanese tradition for transporting lunch. The box itself can be a simple plastic container, but is usually an expression of the owners taste and style. Some bento sets are made of fancy decorated lacquered wood. Search Harajuku bento box or Hello Kitty bento box for cute designs and accessories. Bento is traditionally wrapped in a cloth pouch or tied with a large square of beautiful cloth( furoshiki) for carrying. A lot of effort is put into the food in a bento box-as with most things Japanese, it's considered an art form and must taste good but also be pleasing to the eye.

Bento box in a Japanese restaurant is meant to be eaten there at the table and not taken away. It is a tray with separated sections containing an array of small portions of food-usually some kind of meat, rice, sushi, dipping sauces, all attractively arranged. What is a bento box and how does one make it?
Bento box is a box that contains a portion of meat, rice, usually shaped in a ball or even some design. And is usually a snack or lunch for some Japanese people to take with them. Google it. Its pretty neat. What is a bento box and how does one make it?
It is Japanese. I don't think it has to do with the way it is cooked, it is simply different japanese foods in a little tray.

What theme should i make my bento box?

I'm new to the bento/kyaraben world, but i am quite skilled at making cute stuff. I'm making a kyaraben for school tommorow with my cute new bento box (its black, and square with two layers). I have some brown rice and onigiri shapers, but dont know what to do. I was thinking a farm theme box (like AnnatheRed did) with rice sheep and a egg chicken. What are your ideas? What theme should i make my bento box?
You can do fun things with a farm theme! Fences, for example, out of anything linear you like, and greens fit in perfectly. You could even be crazy with baby corn and have a corn plant of sorts (ignore that they're shucked already!).

With a black bento box, I think you're going to have to do a space-themed lunch sometime. Moon, stars, comets, planets, all of them would be fun, and you could have an egg spaceship if you wanted!

Any Japanese, ie: Sushi restaraunts serve Bento Boxes. It's a way food is served, in a special box, not a box you order with food you heat at home. That wouldn't be so good. Most bento boxes have 2 item choices like sushi and teriyaki chicken, then salad, sometimes tempura or a fried food and usually some fried chicken, which sucks in every restaraunt. There isn't an authentic Japanese sushi place or the usual, Korean owned sushi place that has good fried chicken. So you can save yourself the tons of money they charge for the extra stuff and get a 2-3 item combo (which usually has salad).Where can I order fully loaded bento boxes?

(Mike - bento refers both the food and the box you put it in, and generally refers to any sort of meal that you would eat for lunch, or while traveling.)

Bento can contain virtually anything. Try a katsu of pork or chicken, along with some rice and veggies, for instance. You can make the cutlets the night before and put them in the fridge. Then in the morning, just slice them up and place on your rice in the bento box and off you go. The food will stay good for the few hours it'll be out of the refridgerator before you eat it.
Try going to Just Bento. Great recipes and yummy photos.

    YES,

On East 41st Street between Madison avenue and fifth avenue, there are about a half dozen japanese stores that sell japanese food and, some of them, sell Bento boxes.

Also, there are several JAS MARTS in New York City.

    Google them.

How much does a Bento Box Lunch cost in Japan?

My friend and I are going to Japan and we need a food budget and I can't find out how much a bento box lunch costs? How much does a Bento Box Lunch cost in Japan?
bento lunches cost from 398 yen for the noriben, upwards to about 800 yen for a deluxe bento from a bento shop or supermarket. the other posters are correct to tell you not to limit yourself to bento as there are many cheap alternatives especially in the cities. try yoshinoya for the gyudon ,beef on rice, okonomiyaki, found everywhere japanese claim it is japanese pizza, can't say i agree but it is delicious. kaiten sushi shops sell 2 pieces of sushi for 100 yen, even cheaper sometimes. if you're really pushed walk around the food court of a department store and try as many free samples as you can. for a splurge go to an all you can eat and drink beer garden where you can sate yourself for around 3,000 for 90~120 minutes on food and alcohol. How much does a Bento Box Lunch cost in Japan?
    Great answer above!

Indeed though, people tend not to believe this for whatever silly reason, but upon investigation of prices in Japan in big cities: despite this almost being a universal rule, it is not in japan's big cities at least...that is to say, you can find cheaper food if you do NOT cook your own food/buy from the grocery store. Convenient stores are cheaper by a long shot. Also, they can often be better than mini-marts attached to gas stations in America.

Bento box lunches? I only got them twice, i think it was around 1000 or so yen, but likely 200-300 more than that i almost want to say. Anyone who actually remembers want to chime in?

You probably will not want a bento box everyday for every meal anyway, those suckers are so filling and too much food often. How much does a Bento Box Lunch cost in Japan?
You don't have to get bento boxes all the time. Not sure how much they cost, but at convenience stores they have 2-5 dollar lunch things that are adorable and yummy. I especially love rice balls and they always have them. You can get yogurt too, I miss it so much!

How long are you staying? You could buy other food too and make your own lunches if you are staying long enough. (Like grocery store food... they have giant apples)How much does a Bento Box Lunch cost in Japan?
If you go to one of the speciality bento box places, like hokka hokka tei or hotto motto expect to pay anything between 500-1,000 yen.

There's plenty of options for food though, don't limit yourself to horrible bento boxes!

    Bento recipes for bento boxes?

I will be getting a bento box kit for my birthday. Does anyone know of some good recipes for bento's? I'd really like to learn how to make all the cute and artsy looking bento recipes and so on. Any help would be appreciated!Bento recipes for bento boxes?
I've gone into bento myself, and the only better than eating the food is fixing it. It's a great place for you to let out your creativity with food!

I'd suggest not going hog-wild and buying a bunch of accessories to start off with until you get used to packing your lunch with bento. Instead, you can use common, everyday ideas:

Use open cookie cutters to shape sandwiches and soft foods, like cheese slices, or to form shapes in medium-grain rice.

Cut string cheese (those individually-wrapped cheese logs) in forths and peel them halfway down to make little "ferns".

Use candy papers (they look like reese's cup papers) to separate large sections into smaller ones.

    For accessories:

Look in places like Dollar Tree for inspiration. I found a dozen 1x1" sauce containers for a buck. Make sure anything you buy is microwave safe if you plan to warm something in it, and make sure it will fit in your bento box. If you find something cute, cheap, and small, think about bento uses. In a word, think "inside the box".

You can also look at sites by searching for "bento" or "bento recipes." Many sites include recipes, cutting info, and general info, like http://www.lunchinabox.net/. Don't be afraid of experimenting and have fun!
