Is Roasted Seaweed the same as Roasted Nori? (for Bento Box)?

I'm learning to make bento box lunches and I want to know what to look for when I'm at the store but I've seen these two things used a lot in the videos I watch and the recipes i read. I want to know if they're same and can be interchanged or if I have to get each thing separate.

Thank You^_^|||You are absolutely correct.

Roasted Seaweed = Roasted Nori.

Note: You'll need to pay attention to roasted seaweed/nori though. Some are seasoned and some are not. Some also contained a small amount of added oil. So, not all roasted seaweed/nori are identical.|||Yes, it is. Seaweed is called Nori in Japanese. It is a type of algae, traditionally cultivated in the harbours of Japan. Today nori is farmed, processed, toasted, packaged and sold in standard size sheets.

When making Bento boxes?

When you make a Bento box and you put something warm in it, is the idea to eat it cold later or do you heat it up? Or do you get a special box that means things won't go cold??|||You can heat it up later if you want. Or you can also get insulated bento boxes for hot or warm food. This way the food can stay warm.

But generally, bento foods are supposed to be eaten cold. Thats why they usually put foods that don't need to be heated up.

  • Bento boxes in Edmonton?

I've been looking on alot of websites for cute bento boxes, but I'd rather not purchase online. Is there a place in Edmonton that would sell them? I'm thinking somewhere in Chinatown at West Edmonton Mall but it's completely on the other side of the city from where I live and don't want to make the trip for nothing. Any tips?

P.S. I want just a bento box. Not one already made with food in it and all.

I have sushi (California roll), wasabi, ginger, and soy, and a pair of chopsticks.

Then there is this piece of plastic with sweet stuff on it. the squares are 2X2, and the sugar film is 1X1 square in the center. There are 8 squares. I'm guessing it's a candy.

Does this normally come with bento boxes?|||Perhaps it is Botan Ame, kind of a fruit candy

It is rare for candy to be included in a bento box. If it is sweet, it is either sweet beans or fruit.

    Japanese bento question?

When japanese people make a traditional bento, what kind of rice do they use (jasmine, regular rice, etc.) and do they add anything special to it to add a certain flavor?|||Japonica rice, which is grown in Japan and sticky. You rarely find other kinds of rice in Japan due to the duty imposed on them and little demand of them; Japanese people eat rice other than Japonica kind little to nothing.

I give you an example on 'little demand': In 1993, Japan got a very cold year and the amount of rice harvested was small enough for Japan to consider import rice from overseas. The government imported rice from Thailand; however, Japanese people either disposed it or used it just as fried rice because it was a different kind of rice and didn't match their taste at all. Many people tried to buy rice directly from Japanese farmers for very high prices. It was a disastrous incident for the Japanese, people with sophisticated taste, and led to the partial opening of Japanese rice market to foreign farmers two years later causing the rise of California rice. I remember the incident very well and my uncle's family had a puddy field so fortunately we could eat top quality Japanese rice with no effort.

%26gt;do they add anything special to it to add a certain flavor?

Not normarly. Though sometime we make a flavoured rice dish called 'takikomigohan'.

Tins and storage containers can also be found at stores like Target and Walmart. Specific bento boxes though, I haven't seen.|||Usually you can find them at any Japanese supermarket. It's called DAISO JAPAN, and mostly everything they sell is $2.00 (a steal for a bento box) rather than $1.00. You can find everything Japanese there, including bento boxes. thanks =)|||I'm in the same situation as your husband. Traditional bento is served cold; however, I use a Thermos Nissan Stainless Steel Lunch Tote http://www.amazon.com/Thermos-Nissan-Oun鈥?/a> I got it about 10 yrs ago when I selected it out of my company's Christmas gift catalog. It took me awhile to appreciate it, but about five years ago, I started to regularly use it because sandwiches were getting old and boring. I now use it four times a week for lunch.

The Thermos Nissan has four containers. The #1 container is a leak-proof container (I always shake it after filling it to make sure the lid is on correctly). The #2 container is an insulated container for rice (not leak-proof). The #3 and #4 containers are Tupperware-like containers (not leak-proof). When I first got it, I didn't think it was big enough until I filled it up with food and then emptied everything on a dinner plate. I was amazed how much food it holds.

I fill the #1 container with hot soup (miso or Lipton cup-a-soup). The #2 container is 1/2 filled with brown rice and topped with protein (salted or smoked salmon, chicken, beef). The #3 and #4 containers are filled with steamed baby carrot, soy beans, cheese, etc. Sometimes I'll freeze a jello cup, remove the #3 container, drop the #4 container to the 3rd place, and put the frozen jello cup in the #4 position. (I hope that makes sense.) By freezing the jello, the heat from the soup and rice won't "melt" the jello.

I pack my Thermos Nissan between 7:00 and 7:30 AM. I'll eat lunch around 12:30 PM. After five hours, the soup and rice / protein stay warm and there's still a slight freeze to the jello. I truly look forward to lunch especially on cold days when I know I've got HOT SOUP.

After about five years of regularly using the Thermos Nissan, I can honestly say that it has improved my health (eating better food, eating smaller portions) to the point that I've lost weight, lowered my blood pressure, and everything else my doctor has told me to improve. I've also saved $$$$$$.

If you get the Themos Nissan or something similar, there is a learning curve on how to prepare and use it, but once you and your husband grasp it, you'll never regret it.

  • I need help with coloring my bento rice...any help?

That title is actually misleading. I've never colored my bento rice, it's all been white because I'm wary about mixing color in. I've heard that either food coloring or colored foods like carrots work fine, but I'm not sure how to mix it into the rice without letting the rice lose its stickiness.

Any bento experts out there want to help me out?|||Coloring rice will not cause the rice to lose it's stickiness. Coloring rice is very easy, but tricky. Using food coloring is the easiest and best way to get a desired color. You simply add more or less color to make your desired color.

If you use foods to color, remember that the rice will take up the flavor of whatever you are using for coloring. And, unless you use something like beet juice, your colors will be very light. Simply adjust your rice cooking water for the volume of color liquid. In other words, if you use 16 oz. of water to cook your rice and want to add a teaspoons of color, even it out by taking out a teaspoon of cooking water.

    |||It's pretty easy. Just boil the rice with food coloring. If you use carrots, just slice them up really tiny and cook it in the rice. You can use corn and frozen mixed veggies too. Just add them towards the end while the rice is still super wet. I've always cooked the rice with the spices while it's cooking in the pot. Once it's done, open the lid and let it dry a little then you can mold it to whatever you want to.|||In the Asian section of the supermarket, look for bonito flakes. It come packaged in red or green. Tips for a romantic bento?

So my boyfriend and I are about to have been together for half a year now and I want to do something special to mark the occasion. I already take my own bentos to school every day and I thought it would be nice to surprise him with a romantic bento. My problem is my bentos are very basic and I can't find tips anywhere on how to make a bento lunch more romantic. So please could someone give me some tips? I would greatly appreciate it!|||Bento can be very simple or very elaborately arranged. In Japan, there is a bento style called kyaraben or “character bento”, where the bento is designed to look like popular Japanese cartoon characters (anime) such as Anpanman, Doraemon and Mickey Mouse. You could do something along these lines to make a romantic bento.

    Japanese Bento

http://japan-australia.blogspot.com/2010…|||You can buy cookie cutters (small ones) and cut out heart shapes of the meat. You can carve carrot slices into flower shapes. You can buy plastic egg molds at the Japanese shops, cook a hard boiled egg, shell it while it's still hot, put the hot egg into the mold and refrigerate--when it is cold, unmold and it will be in the shape of the mold--molds come in star, heart, moon (car, fish, etc.) shapes--you can slice the unmolded egg in half so it looks pretty. Tuck some chocolate covered strawberries and melon in the box (not too many, Japanese bentos are usually just a taste of this, a taste of that).|||I am not sure if you can get the ingredients as seen in this seb sites:http://www.ajinomoto.co.jp/recipe/obento… but sure it gives you some hint in making a romantic bento.|||to go with the japanese theme of a bento box you should make little sushi rolls with heart shapes in them. they dont have to have fish anything works. just roll it so when you cut it theyll be little hearts!! and use his fave ingredients.|||wtf's a bento????

Bento boxes are usually filled with 3 maint things: steamed rice, vegetables, and a serving of meat or fish. Sometimes, they can be used to carry Sushi, as well.|||For a bento box, there's usually rice, a vegetable and a meat I believe.

    I'm not 100% sure though.

If you have a local Japanese market in the area (we have a bunch here), they probably sell the boxes.

    But yeah.

There's usually rice, a veggie, and something like chicken or a seafood.|||Many of my friends have bought bento boxes at asian stores, but I think that would depend on where you live. If you cannot find any in your asian store, I would suggest getting one off of the internet. :/

As for what you should put in it, a must is rice, since rice is a required dish in a traditional japanese meal. Most of the time there will be a salad or some kind of vegetable (you can look online for simple recipes for this, too), and then there's usually a meat.

A fun thing to try out would be the cute little octopus hotdogs, which are hotdogs that look like octopus. They are simple to make and so cute! All you have to do is split the bottom of the hotdog into four slices and let the hotdog sit on the splits, and there you have it!

That's about all I have...I hoped this helped you!|||You can buy bento boxes on eBay or J-Box. I think Asian Food Grocer stocks bentos sometimes too.

You can put whatever you want in your bento. It's not like it's illegal to put non-Japanese food in a bento box, after all. But if you want some Japanese recipes I'm sure you can find a bunch by Googling.

Is this considered a bento box?

I have three round bowls that are 12cm in diameter that can be stacked could these be considered bento boxes or do they have to be actual boxes|||A Japanese bento is usually in a boxed-shaped container. Containers or bento boxes usually range from disposable mass produced boxes to beautiful hand crafted lacquerware. That said, a bento can be anything that you make it and doesn't have to be traditional boxed shaped container if you only have round containers. Simple Foods To Add Into Bento?

I like to make small lunches for my boyfriend and I'm running out of ideas ! What are some simple recipes I can conjure up to reinvent it a little ? (:|||well, obviously rice. but not just plain rice. perhaps add some peas and carrots to the rice. or maybe some pieces of nuts. even some types of fruit. nori rolls, or nigiri. noodles work well with some nice light sauce. again, plain noodles or add things. many things hold up quite well, especially if you chill them well before packing. and again add some chopped or sliced nuts or sesame seeds or sunflower seeds, perhaps lightly steamed veggies. all sorts of things to put in a baked or steamed bun. consider sweet red bean paste (azuki beans), yum. cashew chicken will hold up very well. make a salad with lentils and veggies. go crazy with salad, either raw or steamed, plain, or lightly sauced. if you have a thermos, hot or cold soup is always nice. add a few small candies, i like jelly beans or those little paper wrapped taffies.

don't listen to mom, go ahead and play with your food. cut pieces of veggies in fun shapes as edible decoration. make a rose from cherry or grape tomatoes. use different sprouts as a bed for other things. thinly sliced radishes add a zing in flavor and are a nice touch added to many things. small pieces of green onion sliced lengthwise and soaked in ice water for awhile will curl up

    Bento Sizes and Calories?

I read on this website in order to have a low calorie bento it must be a cetain size...I want to get one but it can only hold up to 560 calories in it. Does anyone know what size in mL is a 560 calorie bento?|||There is no standard sizes or recipes for bento. You can have a bento lunch the size of a laptop and depending what is in it, it could have fewer calories than a bento lunch the size of a a piece of toast if it is filled to the brim with rice, meat and sauce pored over the top.

You can't determine calories of something that is made up of variable ingredients by size alone!

That is like say "what size soft drink is 250 calories" Well it darn well depends on what it is in the cup - you know?!?!?!?!?!?!

All the moms I know use it. Although it's geared somewhat for kids, there's lots of good info. for adults too - including recipes and ideas.|||The origin of bento can be traced back to the late Kamakura Period (1185 to 1333), when cooked and dried rice called hoshi-ii (糒 or 干し飯, literally "dried meal") was developed. Hoshi-ii can be eaten as is, or can be boiled with water to make cooked rice, and is stored in a small bag. In the Azuchi-Momoyama Period (1568 to 1600), wooden lacquered boxes like today's were produced and bento would be eaten during a hanami or a tea party.

A typical 1000 Yen ekiben, purchased at Tokyo Station

Bento purchased on the Bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto - in Daruma boxIn the peaceful and prosperous time of the Edo Period (1603 to 1867), bento culture spread and became more refined. Travelers and sightseers would carry a simple koshibentō (腰弁当, "waist bento"), consisting of several onigiri wrapped with bamboo leaves or in a woven bamboo box. One of the most popular styles of bento, called makuno-uchi bentō ("between-act bento"), was first made during this period. People who came to see Noh and Kabuki ate specially prepared bento between maku (acts). Numerous cookbooks were published detailing how to cook, how to pack, and what to prepare for occasions like Hanami and Hinamatsuri.

In the Meiji Period (1868 to 1912), the first ekibentō or ekiben (駅弁当 or 駅弁, "train station bento") was sold. There are several records that claim where ekiben was first sold, but it is believed that it was sold on 16 July 1885, at the Utsunomiya train station, and contained two onigiri and a serving of takuan wrapped in bamboo leaves. As early schools did not provide lunch, students and teachers carried bento, as did many employees. A "European" style bento with sandwiches also went on sale during this period.

In the Taisho period (1912 to 1926), the aluminum bento box became a luxury item because of its ease of cleaning and its silver-like appearance. Also, a move to abolish the practice of bento in school became a social issue. Disparities in wealth spread during this period, following an export boom during World War I and subsequent crop failures in the Tohoku region. A bento too often reflected a student's wealth, and many wondered if this had an unfavorable influence on children both physically, from lack of adequate diet, and psychologically, from a clumsily made bento or the richness of food. After World War II, the practice of bringing bento to school gradually declined and was replaced by uniform food provided for all students and teachers.

Bento regained its popularity in the 1980s, with the help of the microwave oven and the proliferation of convenience stores. In addition, the expensive wood and metal boxes have been replaced at most bento shops with inexpensive, disposable polystyrene boxes. However, even handmade bento have made a comeback, and they are once again a common, although not universal, sight at Japanese schools. The Bento is still used by workers as a packed lunch, by families on day trips, for school picnics and sports days etc. The Bento, made at home, is wrapped in a furoshiki cloth, which acts as both bag and table mat.

Two typical home made Bentos (one open, one wrapped) - note the furoshki clothsBento is also popular in Taiwan. Bendong or Biendang (便當, "convenience pack") made its way to Taiwan in the first half of the 20th century from Japan, where it remains very popular to the present day. The term is a loan word from the Japanese word in Taiwanese and Taiwanese Mandarin.

In 2003, airports started offering an analogous version of the ekiben: bento filled with local cuisine, to be eaten while waiting for an airplane or during the flight.

'O-bento' is what the Japanese call a packed meal, usually lunch. Bento boxes have internal dividers, and sometimes several stacked layers, so different kinds of food sit in their own little compartments. (This is nice if, like me, you don't necessarily like to mix flavours!) The whole thing is usually wrapped together with chopsticks in a cloth or special bag, and the goal is to make the whole package as attractive as possible - from considering the colour combinations of the food and presenting and garnishing it as neatly and artfully as you can, to co-ordinating the box, chopsticks and wrapper, and any other items like paper napkins, knife and fork or spoon, drink flask or thermos.

Bento boxes themselves range from handsome lacquered wood boxes, with which you may be served in a nice Japanese restaurant, to children's plastic lunchboxes decorated with cartoon (anime) character art. There are styles to appeal to the businessman, the elegant young lady, the differing tastes of little boys and girls. I once saw an extra-large charcoal-grey bento box that I thought would be exactly right for Tony Soprano!

As with so much of modern Japanese culture, the aesthetic (especially for children and young women) is strongly based on a compact cuteness. If you went to a school where kids brought packed lunches, you know how much it means to a kid when Mum (or Dad, or whoever takes care of these things at home) packs his or her favourites, and what a social advantage it is to have a parent who packs lunches that are admired or envied, particularly if the food is handy for swapping and sharing. The same is true in Japanese schools, but the 'judges' award a lot of additional points for presentation. There is often some rivalry between housewife-mothers to produce the niftiest bento, which can be fun, but is a source of serious and unwelcome social pressure for some women, who rise early in the morning and agonise over what to make today, so their children's friends and teachers won't think they suck.

The base of any bento lunch is cold, cooked white rice, or sometimes noodles - the filling, carbohydrate-rich staples of the Japanese diet. (I wonder if anyone in Japan is willing to try the Atkins diet, or are they all too sensible?) In addition, there's okazu - side dishes, which can include meat, fish, eggs, tofu, fruit and vegetables, all presented in bite-size form for handy chopstick action. They all have to be prepared in such a way that they will taste nice cold (although sometimes bento is reheated). Okazu add colour and flavour, vary with the seasons, and round out the nutritional value of the meal with protein, vitamins and minerals. For colour and dietary balance, try to have one 'protein' item and at least two from the fruit/veg category (remember, a healthy diet includes at least five handful-sized portions of fruit and vegetables a day). Of course, there are also different ways of dressing up the rice or noodles to avoid monotony. As well as seasonal items, bento may showcase regional specialties - this is true of ekiben, takeaway bento sold at railway stations around Japan. You can take an ekiben eating tour of the nation if you like!

Bento form part of the Japanese language of love. Aiso bento (I think I spelled that right) means bento made as a romantic gesture. In a culture where girls are traditionally expected to be pretty demure and domestic, one of the accepted ways to show a boy you like him is to make him a special bento. Of course, when you look at some of the wilder Japanese youth culture, that seems sweetly old-fashioned, but it can still mean a lot! In shoujo (for girls) anime and comics (manga) you'll often see schoolgirls give bento to the boys they have a crush on - in Wedding Peach, Momoko's attempt to do this for the handsome Yanagiba is thwarted when pesky but attractive Yosuke points out that the food wasn't homemade, but came from a convenience store! In Maison Ikkoku (although it's more of a seinen - young man's - manga), Kyoko shows her affection for Godai by making him cute kid-style lunches that will impress the children at the daycare centre where he works. Bento can also be a wife's way of showing her husband that she still cares for him - and, of course, her children that she loves them and wants their day at school to be pleasant.

Thanks!|||Try the site below. They do have what they call ' sticky rice ', it's a little different than your regular rice.|||The best rice to use for Japanese dishes or bento is Japanese sticky rice which is a short grain rice. In most Western countries you can buy this rice in the supermarket and it is labelled as sushi rice. Basically any short grain rice will suffice. Wash the rice three times in cold water before cooking as this will remove a lot of the starch and your water should go from a cloudy milky colour the first wash to a clear colour for the last wash.

Just marinate skinless and boneless chicken thighs in teriaki sauce and broil for about 5 minutes per side. Slice into strips and serve over some shredded cabbage with a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds. Another section could have a little green salad made with iceberg lettuce, some shredded carrot and a slice of tomato. I find the best substitute I know for the Japanese dressing is French Dressing with a bit of toasted sesame oil added. Sort grain rice is a necessity, as is a quartered navel orange. http://www.ajinomoto.co.jp/recipe/bentou鈥?/a>|||I'm not sure exactly what the 3-2-1 thing means but from what I've seen during my stay last summer, the big part of the bento was rice. They they also sometimes had a little bit of omelet. I can't remember what else was involved but those were the big things.|||I know the 4-3-2-1 bento system.

It is a proportion of the areas that of each in the lunch box occupies.

    4:rice.

    3:meat or fish.

    2:vegetable.

    1:tsukemono(pickles) or dessert.|||Seeing is believing.

    http://food.blogmura.com/obento/

    3-2-1 system:

I'm not sure but it's probably kinda rule that you'd better take meal volume and/or calorie in the ratio to 3:2:1 for breakfast(3), lunch(2) and dinner(1) for good dieting. That is just one of many health advocates and no proof of real effect there.

Instead meat , oil, sugar and salt too much, try a lot of fiber , vegis and fish. This is a basic Japanese style of bento.

The looks, appearance is also very important. Japanese loves arts for everything even for bento. Recipes are not ruled. Everything you want to cook would be packed all together.

It depends on your imagination and cooking skill.|||I think the three-two-one system might be the portion size (is that what you're talking about??) i've never heard of it called tht way, but i know that most of the time a healthy bento has a half the box is rice and then the other half is divided into smaller sections for other foods. My dad is trying to put our family on a diet (we're not fat or anything, but he wants to be healthier) and he uses some 3 to 1 rule where there is 3/4 rice and veggies and good stuff and then 1/4 meat or fish and stuff.

My mom has a Bento cookbook thing that my grandmother gave me (in japanese, though) and it gives different layouts, different recipes, different sets of food and everything. If you're going to japan, buy one at the bookstore when you get there. Ask a clerk to help you find them. Otherwise, use the internet:

    Questions about New bento box?

hi guys! i just got a new bento box from a store in my town. i really love it, but it is very small. i know that japanese culture uses small portions, but i was just wondering if they carry a drink along or anything else besides the bento box itself? thank you guys very much!|||Carry along a thermos with boiling hot water, and bring along a green tea bag. Enjoy!|||I've seen a few sites about bento and bento style lunches where they pack a thermos of soup along with the box. The only link I have is to a bento-style site that's run by a woman from the US. Need help with Bento ideas and recipes thank you?

If you live in Japan, your best bet is to ask someone in your community: Neighbor, friend, school teacher, housewife etc.

They'll not only be able to provide you with Bento ideas but the cheapest places to purchase the ingredients needed.

You can also try asking the local Junior High School students. They may have a book or two on the subject as "家庭科” Kateika or home economics is usually a required course and if my memory serves me right, I've seen them with obento books in class.

If you don't live in Japan, you can look into different "Bento Box" books on amazon but beware as a lot of the books labeled "bento" are not actual about Japanese Bento but Western Cuisine presented in a bento format. It all depends on what you're looking for.

    Here are some book recommendations:

Nancy drew shadows edge bento boxes?

I cannot figure these things out?Nancy drew shadows edge bento boxes?
I know they can be really irrating! The best thing to do is draw a 3X3 square and fill it in yourself. Start with the biggest piece (because there generally arent that many places to put it) and then fit the smaller pieces around it. It takes practice to get in the swing of it

This site has a bit of an explanation:

This is going to be a matter of logic. And I'm sorry to tell you this, but --

-- the puzzles are random. So while I can tell you the general rules about how these puzzles work, I can't actually give you the exact answer you need. You're most likely going to have to figure it out on your own. Please don't hurt me.

So let's get started. First off, all the patterns you see at the right need to fit into the box at the same time, which means that some of them will overlap.

The squares with two drawings in them -- say, a bear and a bowl of rice -- tell you exactly what piece goes there -- in this case, the rice bear.

The squares with only one drawing in them -- say, just a bear -- tell you that any of the three pieces of that type might go in there -- in this case a bear, but it could be the egg bear, the rice bear, or the sandwich bear.

The empty squares tell you nothing about what goes in there. Oh dear.

The next move is to figure out where the different shapes on the right will fit into the three-by-three box in the middle. Some shapes have only one way to fit into the box; a three-by-three cross, for example, can only go into the box dead center. A single row or column or a group of four squares can fit in several different places.

If you have a large piece that can only go in one way, hurray! If that large piece has any of the squares that tell you exactly what piece goes there, put it in the box first. You're on your way!

Also look for pieces or patterns that repeat. I once had an arrangement in which there was a column with the bear egg at the top, and a row with the bear egg at the left. Since there's only one bear egg possible, they had to be the same square -- so boom, I had a column and a row all ready to go, and the bear egg went in the upper left corner

Now take a look at the remaining pieces and see where they might fit in. A block of four squares can fit in any of the four corners; if you have a large piece already in place, that block of four has to overlap with it somewhere. Look at the pieces involved and figure out where it's possible for it to go..

Once you have a general idea where things might go, start placing the pieces. You can sometimes place items based on the process of elimination. For example, if you know the pig sandwich goes here and the pig egg goes here, the pig rice has to go in the remaining pig spot.

When you fill in the last slot, if you got it right, Nancy comments and you bounce back out to talk to Yumi. If not, try switching pieces you weren't sure about; sometimes that's all you need. If you're totally confused, press the red "Reset" button to start over.

If all else fails, try working this out in the physical world. That is, take a piece of paper, draw the pieces you have, and cut them out, then start moving them around on a table to see what works and what doesn't.

If your having real trouble or just can't be bothered, try this site: http://www.gameboomers.com/wtcheats/pcNn鈥?/a>

  • Does anyone have complete Bento Box quilt instructions for making a 6" square from 21/2" strips?

The basic process is very simple. Each block consists of five pieces, with the outer two the same color as the inner one. The center two pieces are in contrasting fabric. You'll make an equal number of light-dark-light and dark-light-dark blocks. Then you'll place them so they alternate light/dark blocks and turn to form the boxes.

    For the LIGHT blocks:

2 1/2" square in light fabric

2 1/2" square in dark fabric

    2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle in dark fabric

    2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle in light fabric

    2 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangle in light fabric

Sew the square together using a scant 1/4" seam. This should leave you with a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle. With the LIGHT square at the right, sew the 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" DARK rectangle to the top. Now you'll have a 4 1/2" square. Sew the 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" LIGHT rectangle to the left side, then sew the 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" LIGHT rectangle to the top. You will have a 6 1/2" square. Repeat to form as many light squares as you need.

    For the DARK blocks:

2 1/2" square in dark fabric

2 1/2" square in light fabric

    2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle in light fabric

    2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle in dark fabric

    2 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangle in dark fabric

Repeat the steps above, substituting light for dark and vice versa.

Each block requires 7" of one and 13 1/2" of the other. Since you're making equal numbers of both blocks, you can just cut all of the pieces from each strip. You can get enough pieces for four complete blocks from one light strip and one dark strip. Four blocks equals one 12" finished "box", so you can use that to calculate how many strips you need. Decide how big you want the quilt to be, then divide the width and height by 12". Round up (or down if you plan to add borders). That is the number of boxes across and down. Multiply your number across by your number down to determine how many total boxes. That is the number of 2 1/2" strips of light AND dark you need.

Bento Box Recipes: Excellent Books and Sites?

What are some excellent books and sites out there that have really unique bento recipes? I've checked online but some books/sites I saw weren't good. Please point me in the right direction.Bento Box Recipes: Excellent Books and Sites?
The typical Japanese bento lunch box consist of a meat, rice and some vegetables and/or pickles. The meat can be a variety of fish such as salmon, or fried chicken, pork cutlets, sausage, hamburger. The rice can be plain or consist of a topping sprinkled on called “furikake”.

For an easy Japanese bento lunch box try some boiled white rice or onigiri (rice ball) with a rolled omlette and a few small main dishes like karaage (Japanese fried chicken), hamburger, tonkatsu (deep fried pork cutlet), gyoza (dumpling), spring rolls, mini sausages, potato or pasta salad.

When I pack lunches for a trip, I put together the bread and the veggie slices (or natural peanut butter and jelly) on the whole wheat bread and put it in a sandwich container. I like hte Tupperware ones. They're expensive, but effective. (I've even used one as a freezer container.) Then I put my ketchup and mustard in a small container to add when I want it. THis way, the bread doesn't get soggy. (However, I like it when the bread gets soggy from the PB %26amp; J. It seems to inensify the taste.) I also put in my portable fruit like oranges and bananas in the small cooler as well as baby carrots, celery, etc. I also pack a bag of snacks-- Kashi and/or Triscuits, Whole Foods fruit and grain bars, granola bars (Kashi and/or Cascadian Farms). I even take along dry cereal mixes. (Honey Sunshine, Kashi Heart to Heart, Cheerios, HOney Nut Cheerios, Cascadian Farms Cinnamon Crunch, Cascadian Farms Fruitful Os, EnviroKidz Gorilla Munch, EnviroKidz Leaping Lemurs and anything else we have that might work. I also add raisins and peanuts and semi-sweet chocolate chips.)

Also, do a search for "bento lunches" and you should find some good things.

  • About Bringing Bento lunch to school.?

In 2008 i will start bringing bento to school. I asked a quiestion like this before but i relized i neeed to redo it. I wil be getting bento for christmas. I wanted to know what would be good to pack for my bento. I can not put it in a fridge during school. I want to have onigiri in it with other things. Would it be a good choice? Also if i ever wated to have meat what could i do? Thank you.About Bringing Bento lunch to school.?
I agree with the previous answer -- it is really not necessary to refrigerate your lunch. From observing different food/eating cultures for about 14 years by now (I am not American, but have lived here for that long) I noticed that Americans refrigerate everything out of fear of spoiling food regardless of whether it is necessary or not. In Asia and some European countries, such rampant refrigeration is simply not practiced. With respect to lunch, it is actually the opposite: it is frequently a goal to keep lunch warm, rather than cold! In particular, a popular version of lunch thermos (akin to Zojirushi Mr. Bento http://www.zojirushi.com/ourproducts/lunchjars/lunchjars.html) relies on the hot soup placed on the bottom of this bento container to keep the rest of the food at the slightly warmer than room temperature. So, the conclusion of this thought would be -- don't do anything, just keep your food at the room temperature.

However, if you are not comfortable with this, you could do what another comment here suggested -- refrigerate the bento container the day before and then maybe place it into an insulated lunch bag, which could further be supplied with an ice pack. Alternatively, you could get the above-mentioned insulated thermos/jar and use it as your bento container.

Finally, about what to put in your bento box -- ANYTHING! What makes bento special is not so much WHAT is in it, but HOW it is. The aesthetics is important. Although, trying to put together a balanced meal is of concern as well.

I think you may enjoy the blog devoted to bento (one of many on the web): http://lunchinabox.net. It contains plenty of examples of bento lunches, as well as some really good advice on bento conceptsAbout Bringing Bento lunch to school.?
The joy of the o-bento is the simplicity, like steamed white rice with umiboshi, some grilled salted salmon, some veggies boiled in sweet soy sauce. Maybe a few orange slices.

    or-

steamed white rice with sesame/salt topping, a couple of chicken wing segments, some wilted spinach with sesame oil and soy sauce, and a small bunch of grapes.

    Think balance-light/dark; sweet/salt, soft/firm....

This are the typical bento lunches I make for my kids (and their friends) to take to school here in Missouri, USA. During summertime, I will pack an blue-ice pack to keep the lunch cool. Usually, the food will keep for a couple of hours just fine.About Bringing Bento lunch to school.?
I used to live in Japan and had friends that brought bento lunches to school. A lot of times, for the meat they would have sushi with crab meat, fish, shrimp, pretty much any kind of meat. It wouldn't be fresh-out-of-the-refrigerator cold, but it would still be okay. As their side they would have onigiri or mochi or an-pan.About Bringing Bento lunch to school.?
Just refrigerate it and take it to school like that. You could also purchase an ice pack, small, and place the bento box on top of that to keep your food cool.

About the meat the same thing. Ice pack and it will keep every thing cold.
