While in japan i had many bento boxes with a red colored strip of fish, and i cant remember the kind of fish?

it kinda looked like salmon, but did not taste like salmon but it might have been that it was smoked or cured or something but it was really good and wanted to find out what is was so i can make it myself. While in japan i had many bento boxes with a red colored strip of fish, and i cant remember the kind of fish?
I think salmon is used most in bento. There are so many fishes in Japan that it's difficult to tell you.

Where or which store did you see or buy it?While in japan i had many bento boxes with a red colored strip of fish, and i cant remember the kind of fish?
Salmon is most common, and from the way you described it, that's what it is. As to how to prepare it, I can't help you there.
Salmon is the only red coloured fish I can think of, although I'd call it pink, but the salmon found in bento is usually salted which would explain the difference in flavour. I've never tried this myself as the salmon I buy is already salted, but maybe rubbing salt into the fish at some point before cooking it would do the job? It's worth a try if you can get reasonably priced salmon. Don't use too much salt though, sometimes it's salted so much it's hard to eat.

Grill it though, don't fry it.While in japan i had many bento boxes with a red colored strip of fish, and i cant remember the kind of fish?
Broiled salmon slice is most common in Japanese cheap bento. You just had some preconception of cooked salmon at Western society. If it was rather orange red colored, ocean trout would be another possibility though. If you mentioned it red colored sashimi(raw fish) strip, it might be tuna, too.

It could be Kishu fish which is soaked in vinegar. While in japan i had many bento boxes with a red colored strip of fish, and i cant remember the kind of fish?
Do you mean this? http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikajenzhom鈥?/a>

This is the closest I could get to the "red colored strip".

If you mean that, that is crabstick, made from crabmeat. It is processed crabmeat. You can buy it from supermarkets.

If I'm wrong, sorry I couldn't be of help.
