They they also sometimes had a little bit of omelet. I can't remember what else was involved but those were the big things.|||I know the 4-3-2-1 bento system.

It is a proportion of the areas that of each in the lunch box occupies.

4:rice.

3:meat or fish.

2:vegetable.

1:tsukemono(pickles) or dessert.|||Seeing is believing.

3-2-1 system:

I'm not sure but it's probably kinda rule that you'd better take meal volume and/or calorie in the ratio to 3:2:1 for breakfast(3), lunch(2) and dinner(1) for good dieting. That is just one of many health advocates and no proof of real effect there.

Instead meat , oil, sugar and salt too much, try a lot of fiber , vegis and fish. This is a basic Japanese style of bento.

The looks, appearance is also very important. Japanese loves arts for everything even for bento. Recipes are not ruled. Everything you want to cook would be packed all together.

It depends on your imagination and cooking skill.|||I think the three-two-one system might be the portion size (is that what you're talking about??) i've never heard of it called tht way, but i know that most of the time a healthy bento has a half the box is rice and then the other half is divided into smaller sections for other foods. My dad is trying to put our family on a diet (we're not fat or anything, but he wants to be healthier) and he uses some 3 to 1 rule where there is 3/4 rice and veggies and good stuff and then 1/4 meat or fish and stuff.

My mom has a Bento cookbook thing that my grandmother gave me (in japanese, though) and it gives different layouts, different recipes, different sets of food and everything. If you're going to japan, buy one at the bookstore when you get there. Ask a clerk to help you find them. Otherwise, use the internet:
