I really want to make some bento for my school lunches but Im worried that the contents may go off in my school bag and make me get sick or something terrible.
So first of all, will the meats, vegetables or rice go off after say, 4 hours being in a bento box in my bag?
What kinds of foods/recipes wont go off in that 4 hour period?
Any tips?

4 hours? you do not have to worry about it so much.
But sometimes even mayonnaise gets mold so your concern may be eligible. you wanna consider temperature first. In winter you can stuff anything you want and it won't go bad at all in 4 hours unless you put stuff that's about to decay. unless you or your mother can be dumb enough to put a week old pizza that's already got mold and stuff in the container, you do not have to worry about it winter. in summer you may need extra precautions.
I was in a baseball team and a bunch of us would bring bento and summer was a nasty season for us because foods can decay in a short time due to hot temperatures. my mother used extra precautions on bento since we lived in a very hot %26amp; humid place in Japan. we selected certain foods that don't go nasty so quickly even under hot summer sun like foods that contain vineger and we used antibacterial sheets like this one: http://item.rakuten.co.jp/paper-m/100012鈥?/a>
Acutally, a bento that consists of nothing but rice balls is the best choice in summer to avoid food poisoning from my experience and I actually recommend it but it may be one pathetic bento for some. however I'm sure you will be able to get over it if your lunch is usually something like two sandwiches and a small pack of potato chips.Safe Bento to take to school?
In Summertime hot days, you really have to be careful the content of bento because it may spoil so easily even the box is airtight well.
1) no juicy things
2) well cooked things
3) seasoned(hot spices) things
Fried chicken, French fries, sliced welldone sausage(or bacon/ham), dried curry, cooked Pasta, Yakisoba noodle, Fried dumpling(Gyoza), Spring roll, and If you take some steamed white rice, put an Umeboshi(Japanese plum pickles) or jalape帽o pickles for natural preservative.Safe Bento to take to school?
Almost anything wouldn't go bad in 4 hours. Umeboshi rice ball ( pickled-plum rice ball ) will do at any temperature. It will last 8 hours or more in summertime ! whatever you take to school, you have to be sure that you cooked them properly, then you'll be okay ! you can check out what the umeboshi rice ball you can check the list below.Safe Bento to take to school?
Advices here are very useful.
I'd like to add one more tip.
Don't touch the food by bare hand when you prepare.
Hands are full of unwanted bacteria. Hot temperature makes things worse.
When I make Onigiri, I use cellophane wrap.
Umeboshi will help you a lot.
u studying abroad in japan or something? well me too! haha
well i see my friends eating rice, rice balls, meat balls, etc.
but really dont worry about it. 4 hours isnt problem. its normal. eat sandwitches if u want haha american spirit!
