What a coincidence! I'm learning about Bento boxes, too! Let me tell you a little bit of what i know; comparisions between takeout, and homemade bento.
Physically, i think you'd need lunch pales with separate compartments, if you want to do it traditionally. I saved my boxes from when i ordered bento as takeout.
Anyway, if you want to go traditional, that could be a bit hard. The bento boxes i've had were things that were made fresh.
They consisted of:
__Teriyaki chicken
__Miso Soup
__Salad
__Steamed rice
__Veggie Tempura
__ Califoria Roll sushi
__Shrimp sushi (optional)
Carrying cooked shrimp around school may not be a good idea. Also, Tempura is now made for travel either. It's suppose to be eaten soon after deep-fried, or it will get soggy in less than 10 minutes.
So, i have found a website for light reading on the subject for Bento box cooking. I can't go through the whole thing, but the link is in my sources. Good luck to you!How do you assemble a bento box?
