I love the idea of Japanese bento boxes. I would like one for my lunch, but my family just doesn't have an extra $15 or so dollars to buy one off eBay. Is there anyway I can make one (like out of a different container) or would this be unacceptable in Japan? Can I make a bento box... like the box itself?
Not sure what you mean. I love bento boxes as well. What type are you hoping to make? The less-useful wooden laquer ones that are beautiful, the cute plastic design ones, or functional ones?
You can buy these tupperware called Lock %26amp; Lock which are PERFECT for a functional bento. They seal 100% airtight and watertight so nothing will ever leak. They have four locks, one on each side of the lid, so it will never pop open in your bag. And they sell them with inserts, so you can section your food appropriately. They come in all different sizes. They're really awesome. I have two, a small one and a larger one, I use the larger one for loose food that I want to section off and the small one for one-piece items like some fried rice that I'd like to bring to work, or some pasta, or etc.
I got some bento boxes the last time I was in Japan (the cute plastic ones) but they are not as functional as my lock%26amp;locks, so I don't use them so often. They don't seal as tightly. Though, that's fine if I wrap them tightly in a furoshiki. Can I make a bento box... like the box itself?
Ichiban Kan features unique, practical, affordable items from Japan. You can find hundreds of items ranging from lunch boxes to origami papers. Ichiban Kan is the place to be if you are looking for discounted items with quality! All items are lead- and BPA-free. Don't see what you are looking for? Many items sell out fast. As long as we have stocks at the main warehouse, items will be often replenished. However, once sold out completely, some never come back due to discontinued status, and others may need a few months to be imported again. Our item offerings frequently change, and that's why Ichiban Kan is fun! Anyway, enjoy shopping at this super store!
Are you asking because you don't want to be offensive to anyone of Japanese race? If you think about it, a Bento Box is what you make of it... it's either plastic, metal, or whatever you like. There are plenty of bento boxes on ebay for WAY less than $15 (even when including shipping). Try out the following site and I'm sure you'll be pleased. I'm a bit of a beginner with this whole thing, but I catch on quick. Hope you find something you're happy with! Best wishes!

I purchased the most simple and smallest Hello Kitty Bento Box on there. :)Can I make a bento box... like the box itself?
You can pack your bento into any container you like. Bento is just the meal, which can also be whatever you like. I've see bento packed in disposable Styrofoam boxes from a store. It's certainly not unacceptable.
by your avatar, (assuming you're asian) shouldn't you already know that people won't judge you by your lunch box..
a bento box is simply a plastic container anyways. and any other plastic container would be fine..Can I make a bento box... like the box itself?
